Do Blind People Dream? What the Research Actually Found
Yes, and the studies on how are more interesting than the question. Blind dreamers report four times as many nightmares, and almost no taste or smell in a sighted person's journal.

"Do blind people dream" is one of the most searched questions about dreaming, and the way people phrase it gives away what they're really asking. They don't mean does anything happen at night. They mean: is there a picture in there?
That assumption is the interesting part. Most people treat dreaming as a film that plays behind your eyelids, and vision as the thing a dream is fundamentally made of. The research on blind dreamers takes that apart pretty quickly.
The short answer, then the good part
Blind people dream. As often as sighted people, with the same narrative structure and the same tendency to drop you somewhere you never agreed to go. Nothing about the mechanism is missing.
What changes is the raw material. And once you look at what that material actually is, the more useful question stops being "do they dream" and becomes "what is a dream built out of in the first place."
There's an age cutoff, and it's earlier than you'd guess
The clearest finding in this whole area is that it depends enormously on when someone lost their sight.
In 1999, Craig Hurovitz, Steven Dunn, G. William Domhoff and Harry Fiss published a content analysis of 372 dreams from 15 blind adults in the journal Dreaming, running the reports through software that tagged references to each of the five senses. People blind from birth, or blinded in infancy, reported no visual imagery at all. People who lost their sight in adolescence or later usually kept it, both in waking imagination and in dreams.
Later work put rough numbers on the boundary: blindness before about age five tends to mean no visual dream imagery as an adult, blindness after about age seven tends to mean it sticks around. In between is genuinely mixed.
The thing that stuck with me is that for congenitally blind dreamers this isn't a fade. There's no dim residue of vision that gradually goes out. The channel was never wired for that kind of content, so the dream is assembled from everything else. For people who lose their sight later, it does fade, slowly, over years.
What fills the space
A 2014 study out of the Danish Centre for Sleep Medicine is the one worth knowing. Amani Meaidi and colleagues published the sensory construction of dreams in blind and sighted people in Sleep Medicine, working with 11 congenitally blind participants, 14 who went blind later, and 25 sighted controls. Every morning for four weeks, everyone filled out a questionnaire about what their dreams had contained.
The congenitally blind group reported far more sound, touch, taste and smell than the sighted group did. As Meaidi put it in coverage of the study, "People without visual sensory input dream to a much greater extent in terms of sounds, tastes, smells, and touch."
Taste and smell are the ones I keep thinking about. Those two barely appear in sighted dream reports at all. They're treated as a curiosity when someone mentions them. But they're clearly not dormant equipment, because in a group that isn't spending the whole dream on visual content, they show up constantly. It's less that sighted dreamers lack smell in dreams and more that vision outcompetes it, both in the dream and in what you bother writing down afterward.
The nightmare number
The same study found something harder to shrug off. Nightmares made up 25% of the dreams reported by congenitally blind participants. For the late blind it was 7%, and for sighted controls 6%. Four times the rate.
The themes were specific: getting lost, traffic accidents, falling. Every one of those is an actual hazard of moving through the world without sight, not a symbolic one.
That fits a threat rehearsal reading of nightmares, where the brain runs simulations of the dangers that are genuinely plausible for the person having them. I want to be honest about the caveat, though: eleven people is a small group, and all of it is self-reported. What makes it more convincing than a typical small study is how specific the content is. A vague finding of "more distress" would be easy to explain away as stress or sampling. Traffic and getting lost is not a generic result.
The part that's still argued about
Then there's the messy claim. In 2003, Helder Bértolo's team in Lisbon ran congenitally blind subjects through overnight polysomnography, woke them at intervals for dream reports, and asked them to draw what they had dreamed. The subjects produced drawings of their dream content that were less detailed and more symbolic than sighted controls', but recognizable. The team also found that their measure of visual dream content correlated negatively with EEG alpha power, which is roughly what you'd expect if visual processing were happening.
Domhoff and Nancy Kerr pushed back the following year with a paper titled Do the Blind Literally "See" in Their Dreams? A Critique of a Recent Claim That They Do. Their objection is a good one. Being able to draw the layout of a room is not proof that you experienced it visually. Spatial knowledge gets you a drawing on its own, and a congenitally blind person has plenty of spatial knowledge.
A 2023 systematic review in Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience went through the whole literature and landed on unresolved, while pointing at something that complicates the argument further. In blind people, the occipital cortex gets recruited for other sensory work. So finding activity in what a textbook labels the visual cortex doesn't settle what the experience was like from the inside.
My read is that the word "see" is doing damage here. Asking whether blind dreamers see is asking them to describe an internal experience using a word whose meaning we can only calibrate against our own. That's not a question a brain scan is going to close.
What this does to your own dream journal
None of which is really about blindness anymore.
Most dream journals read like silent films with captions. Almost everything recorded is visual: who was there, what the place looked like, what happened. Sound gets in occasionally, usually dialogue. Touch, smell and taste almost never do, and the Danish results suggest that's a habit of attention rather than an accurate report of what the dream contained.
So try this on your next entry. Before you write down what you saw, ask what you heard. Whether anything had a texture. Whether anything had a smell, which sounds absurd until you catch one. Do it as the first question rather than the last, because by the time you've written a visual summary the rest has usually gone.
You may find nothing on some mornings. But if a group of dreamers who never had vision at all can fill four weeks of reports with taste and touch and sound, that equipment is presumably running in your dreams too. You've just never been asked to look for it.
