How the real world leaks into your dreams
Your brain doesn't fully shut out the world when you sleep. Research shows how sounds, smells, and touch end up in your dreams.

A few months ago I woke up from a dream where it was raining hard on a tin roof. The rain was loud and rhythmic, and I was standing under an awning watching puddles form on concrete. I wrote it all down, then went to brush my teeth and realized the bathroom faucet had been running the whole time. My partner had left it on.
That faucet was in the dream. Not as a faucet — as a rainstorm.
I got curious about what was actually happening, and it turns out this has been studied a lot. Your sleeping brain doesn't fully disconnect from the world around you. It monitors what's happening, filters most of it out, and occasionally pulls something in and gives it a role in whatever dream is already unfolding.
Your brain is still listening
The assumption used to be that sleep was a total sensory blackout. You close your eyes, the brain goes offline, and the outside world disappears until the alarm goes off. That's not what happens.
A 2022 study from the University of Salzburg showed that during NREM sleep, unfamiliar voices triggered significantly more K-complexes (a type of brainwave associated with processing external information) than familiar voices. The sleeping brain wasn't just passively absorbing sound. It was evaluating it, deciding what mattered and what could be ignored.
The researchers call this "sentinel processing mode," which I think is a great name for it. Your brain stays connected to the environment while you sleep, running a low-level threat assessment in the background. An unfamiliar voice gets flagged for closer inspection. A familiar one gets waved through. And as the night goes on, even unfamiliar voices that turn out to be harmless start triggering fewer responses, suggesting the sleeping brain actually learns that a new sound isn't dangerous.
This is probably why you can sleep through traffic noise in your own neighborhood but wake up instantly in a hotel.
Water spray, pressure cuffs, and rotten eggs
The history of researchers trying to mess with people's dreams is surprisingly long.
In 1958, William Dement and Edward Wolpert sprayed cold water on sleeping participants during REM sleep. In 42% of trials where the sleeper didn't wake up, the water showed up in the dream. Sudden rainstorms. Leaking roofs. Getting squirted by someone. The brain took a confusing physical sensation and built a story around it.
In 1993, researcher Tore Nielsen went further. He strapped an inflatable blood pressure cuff to participants' legs during REM sleep and found that over 80% of post-stimulation dream reports contained the sensation. Sometimes it was subtle, just a tingling feeling in the leg. Other times the brain constructed entire scenarios around it, like being trapped or unable to move.
Smell works too, though differently. German researchers led by Boris Stuck presented sleepers with either the smell of roses or rotten eggs during REM sleep. Pleasant smells produced predominantly positive dream emotions. Rotten eggs tilted dreams negative. The smells didn't show up as plot elements the way sounds and touch did. Nobody dreamed about flowers or garbage. Instead, they shifted the emotional color of whatever dream was already happening.
A 2024 systematic review of 51 studies on sensory stimulation during sleep found that incorporation rates vary a lot by sense. Touch, pressure, and temperature had the highest rates, around 42%. Pure tones had the lowest at just 9%, but meaningful sounds like speech and music were pulled in much more often. Visual stimuli, like flashing lights through closed eyelids, showed up in about 23% of cases.
The brain prefers to explain, not to wake up
But the part that really got me is how the brain handles what gets in.
Instead of waking you up to deal with the input, your sleeping brain writes the stimulus into the ongoing dream. A spray of water becomes rain. A pressure cuff becomes paralysis. The brain assigns the confusing sensory data a "role" in the narrative, which lets the dream continue and sleep stay intact.
Researchers think of this as a coherence thing. The dreaming mind doesn't like unexplained sensory signals any more than the waking mind does. So it takes the signal and immediately gives it context, usually fictional, almost always plausible within the dream's own logic. The dream absorbs the disruption and keeps going.
This also explains something dream journalers notice: you rarely dream about a sound as it actually is. You dream about what it could be. A phone vibrating on a nightstand becomes an earthquake, or a bee, or someone knocking on a door.
Not everything gets through
The brain is selective about what it lets in. Research on auditory processing during sleep shows that sounds with personal relevance, like your own name or a baby crying, get more processing than neutral sounds like pure tones. What the sound means matters more than how loud it is.
That lines up with what the systematic review found about incorporation rates. Meaningful stimuli get incorporated far more often than abstract ones. A recording of speech gets pulled into the dream. A beep mostly doesn't. I keep thinking of it like the brain has a bouncer at the door, checking whether each sound is worth letting in.
During REM sleep specifically, the brain actively filters out external speech. A 2020 study published in Current Biology found that during the rapid eye movement phases within REM, the brain's response to outside sounds drops even further. The more vivid the internal experience, the harder it is for outside sounds to break through.
What this means for your dream journal
If you keep a dream journal, this is worth paying attention to. It gives you a window into how your brain handles unexpected input while you're asleep.
When you wake up and write down a dream, think about what was happening around you. Was the window open? Was someone else up and moving around? Were there sounds from outside? A lot of dream journalers find that cross-referencing entries with what was actually happening around them turns up patterns they'd otherwise miss.
Weather is a common one. Rain, wind, and thunderstorms show up in dream journals more often on nights when it's actually raining outside. Temperature matters too. A cold room might not make you dream about cold, exactly, but it might shift the setting — suddenly you're outside in winter, or standing in an empty building with no heat.
There's a practical side too. If your dreams are consistently unpleasant and you can't figure out why, look at your sleep environment. The olfactory research suggests that even ambient smells you don't consciously notice can tilt dream emotions in one direction. A stuffy room, a partner's skincare products, whatever detergent is on your pillowcases. Any of these could be coloring the experience without you realizing it.
I've started adding a line to my morning entries about what was going on in the room when I woke up. Open window, fan running, that sort of thing. It's not much extra effort, and it's already made a couple of entries make more sense in hindsight. That dream about the rainstorm would've been a mystery without it.
